It is with great sadness that we report the death of legendary Dublin midfielder Brian Mullins.

The 68-year-old, who was a towering figure in Dublin's All-Ireland wins of 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1983, passed away today after a short illness.

As well as four All-Ireland SFC medals, the St Vincent's stalwart won nine Leinster SFC titles, two National League crowns and two All-Star awards during an inter-county career that spanned from 1974 to 1985.

'Big Brian Mullins' also enjoyed great success with St Vincent's, leading the Marino outfit to All-Ireland club senior football glory in 1976.

After taking up a teaching post in Carndonagh, Co. Donegal where he played with the local club, Mullins managed Derry to National League honours in 1996 and Ulster SFC glory two years later, while he guided St Vincent's to the Dublin SFC title in 2017.

St Vincent's GAA paid tribute to an "absolute colossus" on Twitter this evening.

Dublin GAA described the five-time All-Ireland winner as a "dominant force who inspired his team-mates."

"In the recent past it has been often said that Dublin teams stood on the shoulders of giants. Today we lost one of those giants. Brian Mullins was a colossus and a Dublin GAA legend," a statement on dublingaa.ie reads.

"Whether in the blue and white of St. Vincent's or the sky blue of Dublin, Brian was a dominant force who inspired his team-mates. Majestic fielding, perpetual motion, clever and accurate in possession, and capable of getting vital scores – he was indomitable with an iron will to win.

"Brian helped light the touchpaper that reignited Dublin’s fire almost 50 years ago. It is with great sadness that he has left us today but the memory of his deeds will live in the hearts and minds of Dublin supporters, and indeed well beyond the county lines, forever.

"Dublin GAA convey their condolences to his family, former team colleagues, both club and inter-county, and friends.
