Classy Canavan shoots Tyrone past Kildare to All-Ireland U20 football crown

Ruairi Canavan starred with 1-7 as Tyrone defeated Kildare in Carrick-on-Shannon this evening to claim the All-Ireland U20 football championship title.
Paul Devlin’s side hit the net after 19 seconds through their talisman, and although Kildare were able to hit straight back with a goal of their own, it was the Red Hands that went on to record the 1-20 to 1-14 triumph.
Canavan’s strike was cancelled out by Daniel Lynam’s palmed goal in the second minute but the Ulster champions were more clinical in attack and it saw them building a 1-9 to 1-5 lead by half-time.

Points from Canavan, Niall Devlin and Rory McHugh kept the scoreboard ticking over for Tyrone in the third quarter and they’d have their lead at six with seven minutes to go thanks to two more frees from Canavan.
Kildare kept up the fight with a brace of points from Luke Killian and a single via Adam Fanning, but their counterparts got motoring again with two more from Canavan before Luke Donnelly rounded off the winning tally.
The success marks Tyrone’s first on this stage since 2015 when a side including the likes of Conor Meyler, Padraig Hampsey, Kieran McGeary and Cathal McShane captured the All-Ireland U21 crown with victory over Tipperary in the final.
