Thousands of Mayo fans are expected to gather in Castlebar this evening to welcome home the new All-Ireland football champions.

Hastings Insurance MacHale Park will host a homecoming event at approximately 5pm after Mayo captured the Sam Maguire yesterday after a 75-year wait.

Among those to congratulate the Westerners on their win was former US president Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Liam and Noel Gallagher from Oasis - all of whom have Mayo roots.

Biden posted on X: "I said it three years ago when I was in Ballina: Mayo for Sam! And I meant it.

"I said it because I know what it means not just the county of Mayo but to my own family's story. Today, the dream becomes reality.

"Congratulations to my friends in Mayo. You earned this victory. Enjoy every minute. Sam is coming home."

Canadian premier Mark Carney also posted: "After 75 years, the curse is broken and the Sam Maguire Cup is coming home."

Noel Gallagher, whose mother hails from Charlestown, also took to social media to say: "FINALLY!! UP MAYO!!"
