Former Clare and Dublin manager Anthony Daly says he was surprised to see some of the Kilkenny players “giving up” towards the end of Saturday’s loss to Galway in Salthill.

The Cats fell to their third defeat in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League on a comprehensive 0-35 to 0-17 scoreline, leaving them in the top tier’s drop along with Offaly with a round remaining.

Speaking on RTE’s Allianz League Sunday programme yesterday, Daly said some of what he saw towards the end of the game at Pearse Stadium is not what he’d associate with Kilkenny in his time watching them.

"I'm a massive Kilkenny fan, I've always been an admirer of everything they bring, but I saw fellas giving up near the end of that game,” he said.

"They wanted to get onto the bus and get out of there. I don't associate that with Kilkenny.

"We were lucky enough maybe once with the Dubs in a league final to beat them fairly well and we gave them a good trimming in a Leinster final, but they still didn’t give up.

"I saw two or three instances near the end where lads didn't go after it, didn't chase it, and that would be worrying for me.

"There's other things I suppose that they have to get right."
