Down dethrone All-Ireland champions in U20FC

March 30, 2023

Down knocked out reigning All-Ireland U20 champions Tyrone in Omagh.

Tyrone's reign as All-Ireland champions is over after they suffered a surprise defeat to Down on a busy night of Ulster U20FC quarter-final action.

Despite fielding nearly half of last year's victorious side, the Red Hands were second best to an impressive Down side at Healy Park. First half goals from Oisín Savage and Jason Morgan helped the visitors to a 2-4 to 0-4 half-time lead, and they extended their advantage after the restart with points from Callum Rodgers, Oisin Treacy and Eoghan Loughran before Eoin McElholm managed a late consolation goal for the holders who crash out at the first hurdle.

Down's semi-final opponents will be Monaghan, who came from behind to edge out neighbours Cavan 1-11 to 0-13 at Kingspan Breffni. Stephen Mooney scored 1-4, including a late brace, to give the Farney the second win in four days.

Derry and Donegal will meet in the other last-four tie following contrasting victories last night. Matthew Downey hit 1-6 as the Oak Leafers romped to a 3-12 to 0-8 victory over Fermanagh in Roslea, while Donegal needed penalties to overcome Antrim in Ballybofey after it had finished 0-15 apiece after extra-time.

Daniel Marley scored the winning penalty after the sides had been level 0-9 each at full-time.
