Mikey Kiely struck four goals as UL retained their Fitzgibbon Cup crown with an emphatic 4-19 to 1-13 victory over University of Galway at the SETU Arena in Waterford this afternoon.

In what was a repeat of last year’s decider, Waterford ace Kiely stole the show with 4-1 over the hour to come back and torment the Galway students having nailed the winning goal late on against them 12 months ago.

On this occasion, Kiely had the sliotar in UG’s net twice inside the opening 12 minutes as they went on to run up and 11-point lead.

The trailers did find rhythm to trim their deficit down to four, but Kiely broke through again before half-time to hammer in his third goal send UL towards a 3-8 to 0-10 interval lead.

Kiely registered his fourth goal early in the restart to make matters worse for the Galway lads while Tipperary’s Gearoid O’Connor (0-9) helped to keep the points flowing at that end.

Greg Thomas nabbed a late goal for UG but it was mere consolation by that stage as Brian Ryan’s men secured the 15-point victory which had Bryan O’Mara and Mark Rodgers collecting the trophy on their college’s behalf.
