Some of Offaly’s rising hurling stars are just 60 minutes away from winning Leinster Colleges ‘A’ and ‘B’ Championship medals in the space of a fortnight.
On Saturday, Glenisk O’Connor Park hosts an all-Offaly Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship final between St Brendan’s Community School, Birr and Coláiste Naomh Cormac, Kilcormac.
The local derby will see players from the combined Offaly Schools team which won the ‘A’ equivalent last Saturday week on opposite sides, including Caelum Larkin and Cathal Robinson (Birr CS) and James Mahon, Brecon Kavanagh, Leigh Kavanagh, Daniel Hand, Mark Mulrooney and Adam Screeney (Cólaiste Naomh Cormac) who also featured on the Offaly team which reached last year’s All-Ireland MHC final, only to lose to a last-gasp Tipperary goal.
Come Saturday evening, some of them will have Leinster Colleges ‘A’ and ‘B’ Championship medals as well as Leinster MHC medals in their possession.
The current wellbeing of Offaly underage hurling is also reflected in Gallen Community School, Ferbane’s involvement in the Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘D’ Hurling Championship final.
