New Meath Manager

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

We would want an announcement this weekend or early next week at the latest at this stage. Very hard to know what is going on. Barry Callaghan would certainly be a safer bet than Bernard Flynn and if the dream candidate EF isn't interested, Callaghan would be the best alternative. He would need a very strong coach and management team.

Joe, I'm not looking to pick a fight here, so apologies if it comes across as such. Just asking questions more than anything.

What has Callaghan done to say he's the best alternative too, I'm assuming Fitzmaurice (which i still think was/is pie in the sky)

Has Callaghan had any success with a club (I don't honestly recall any so open to correction) or underage team as to the best of my knowledge he's managed multiple minor and U21/20 teams to very little success, i'm not sure if they've even won games which would say to me McCarthy and O'Bric (not sure if they're candidates) are immediately better candidates. Callaghan was mentioned yesterday by thejowshow, and i think there's no smoke without fire but I'd genuinely question what Callaghan has done to even be in the running. Before yesterday morning I don't recall anyone here mention his name for the role and suddenly the boulder is gathering speed downhill.

Is he a better candidate than Flynn who he got the U20 job after Flynn's acrimonious departure last year? Who would his backroom team even be in addition to Sean Kelly. Think both would have a lot of question marks over them. I would suggest Robbie Brennan and Michael McDermott are better candidates than Barry Callaghan and have a bit of a track record behind them of at least working with and wining county titles.

Again how very underwhelming an appointment he would be, Callaghan to me would very much be a case of the county board really taking back control of the role as i think Andy (and rightly so) took control and was the face of things not the county board. Callaghan doesn't strike me as a lad that would ask the difficult questions Andy would or demand the standards that Andy would have. This reminds me very much of the Mick O'Dowd appointment.

I'm honestly prepared for a very disappointing announcement. Now maybe as some of the lads have said it might be low key and prove successful but i seriously doubt it given the years on years of continued mismanagement from the executive level.

If going internal I'd give Kevin Reilly my backing in the absence of any outstanding candidates.

Young, smart, energetic and progressive (in a good way, not saying he's woke!).

That might be the best we can get, joint managers maybe.

Brian just to confirm a few bits that I am very confident on
Now.

New sponsors will be providing a chunk of the fee (internal or external is pricy).

Fitzmaurice is interested in the role, I am certain of that but we may end up Flynn and fitzmaurice but that I don't know of bar the article but the few bits I mentioned before I am fairly happy to stick my name behind now.

That's great news joe, i'd be more confident then in what you're saying that things might be better than i hope for.

If Eamonn is interested then it really is a no brainer for me. I agree it'll be pricey, as it should be for a calibre of candidate like that, but as you say there's a sponsor in place to cover a chunk of that. And there should be a decent cash reserve within the county board coffers after recent years.

I don't know anything about a joint manager set up but all the individual components (Flynn, fitzmaurice and finance) definitely are there or willingness to be there.

Not saying any of them will get it but it's not just smoke there is fire there.

Any inclination of who the new sponsors are? Might be?

I do Jinxie but I don't want to share that piece in fairness to all involved but no big shocks and no one will be surprised

Not to pour cold water on what seems to be the optimistic hope here that the EF scenario is a runner.... But... With my pessimistic glasses on I've read that Meath Live article.

I'm always wary of the ever unreliable "unnamed source"... & the information that this "source" has, is pretty much the rumours & suggestions that have been written here. Even My suggestion that a helicopter could be used rather than driving is something that the "source" has suggested....

So basically the "article" on Meath live is just a summary of this thread with no actual info

I hope I'm wrong & will gladly accept any laughing if I'm proven wrong. It'll be a nice one to get wrong.....

I heard mention of Mr Moran and Bective in then last few days and Flynn having visited over the weekend. That's coming from someone who provides support to the team. He said to me other than that he hasn't heard anything.

Yes that's what I heard too in addition to fitzmaurice being interested, I haven't heard anything on combined ticket or the article and would be skeptical of why eamonn would go into that arrangement.

Jinxie i understand that stance and I'll remain in the position of waiting to be pleasantly surprised.

TBF thejoeshow mentioned fitzmaurice being added to the ticket I believe before the article i added. Joe is someone i would very much take his opinion seriously. He doesn't come on here to talk bull **t and spoof like like some people about knowing what's going on.

The person i spoke to said that he knows very little because nothing is coming in. He had a couple of county board members in his business in recent days and even they don't know what was happening. Bar that snippet about Flynn being at Moran's over the weekend that's all I've heard.

He also said there will be players returning or making themselves available to the panel now Andy has departed. One of his employee's was on the panel and dropped off, and has already said he'll go back in if asked by new management.

New sponsor is most certainly Noel Moran - don't think it's much of a secret. He's a good GAA man so I'm sure he'll provide whatever funding is needed. And I'm sure it's hoped we can attract a big name as we have the money from a big sponsor to pay. However, Eamon Fitzmaurice is definitely not in the running for the Meath job. I don't think there is anyone internally who is qualified to take this job so I'd be fine with the right outsider getting it. However the County Board are going for Barry Callaghan with Sean Kelly.
