I felt during the game that Meath always had another gear, and it took the 3rd Wicklow goal to spur them into action. We outscored Wicklow 12 points to 1 after that. Not sure where the others are, but Whitty and Kelly played the Kehoe cup games. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1664 - 03/02/2020 01:19:29 2264718 Link 16 |
Mickey burke should have been hauled ashore before half time. Healy or togher should have been picking up o brien. Irish_downunder (Meath) - Posts: 640 - 03/02/2020 09:04:18 2264737 Link 2 |
A lot to do, needless to say. Just seemed to be flat as opposed to the Ofally second half. Probably took the oppos for granted which they had no right to do. O Brien for them missed a couple of handy ones, which could have changed the game... Meathman678 (Meath) - Posts: 63 - 03/02/2020 21:36:05 2264957 Link 0 |
With Padraig O'Hanrahan on fire and a very strong underage coming through could Ratoath be dark horses for the Jubilee Cup this year? oldsam_newsam (Meath) - Posts: 638 - 04/02/2020 09:09:34 2265000 Link 0 |

Both Ratoath and Trim very strong in the underage, particularly Trim in last few years... Kildalkey have a couple of good groups as well... Standard improving all the time...

Ratoath and particularly Trim will take over Meath hurling in the next 2-3 years. Numbers game. Same in football.. its getting harder and harder for rural clubs to compete. 2020Vision (Meath) - Posts: 29 - 04/02/2020 14:21:27 2265107 Link 0 |
You can see at underage Ratoath and Trim dominating but that does not mean it will turn into senior success. overthehill72 (Meath) - Posts: 334 - 05/02/2020 09:34:17 2265280 Link 0 |
Hold your horses there lads. Trim would have to win 1 before they win 5 or 6. Sometimes it takes a lot for the town teams to keep lads interested. O'Mahonys would testify to that as they enjoyed huge underage success but couldn't transfer this to a senior title. Being a great underage hurler doesn't necessarily mean you will ever play senior hurling. Anyone who knows meath hurling well could name a number of guys who were great prospects but it never transferred. Foley91 (Meath) - Posts: 418 - 05/02/2020 11:06:50 2265307 Link 1 |
Completely agree... this years championship is probably the most open in years... and that is beneficial to the overall development of hurling in the county as the standard needs to keep improving...

Looking at Shane Conway's performance last night in the Fitzgibbon Cup Final we will be doing well to keep him under wraps on Saturday (if he plays - hopefully celebrations with UCC keep going for a few days).... If he does play, it will be worth going just to see him... Looking for a big performance from Meath. Any word on Dougie's red card? Is he suspended? Shane Conway is sure to be a problem and with Shane Whitty not having played in the two opening games our options are limited so I would think that the man for the job is Kieth Keoghan. Having said that I would hope that if it does not work out that we won't spend 45 minutes before making changes like we did against Wicklow. I heard nothing on the Alan Douglas red card appeal but I would not be hopeful.

No straight red. Typical that we can't rely on some of our top players. He'll be a loss for Sunday.

No straight red after the linesman brought it to the ref's attention, I was very close too and let's say no point in appealing it as I knew he was in trouble.

Douglas is not a dirty player and I would say he didn't just decide to take the other guy out. There was probably some background stuff going on.

There was no malice in Douglas' tackle. But his shoulder did make contact with the Wicklow player's helmet, which I'd imagine is a mandatory red card in some official rulebook. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1664 - 13/02/2020 21:00:23 2267580 Link 15 |
Agreed, but that was about the 61st minute and all players on the field should have known at that stage that the referee and his officials were extremely strict. You have only to cast your mind back to the penalty we got, the Wicklow defender slightly pushed our player (Damien) and we got the penalty, now I have seen a lot worse go on and it would be 'play on'. Later on the fellow beside me mentioned that he thought Meath were unfairly penalised, I asked him to think back to our penalty and he agreed. Essentially what I am saying is that players must 'read the referee' early in the game and try and get some idea of what he pulls and what he lets go. This approach should be led by team management as it can make a huge difference to getting a result. It must also be remembered that if the referee makes a complete bags of a game in Div 2 there won't be a word about it. So my advice to the players is, try and read the ref. Team is out, probably will be a couple of changes before throw in (as before every game so far)... Looking for a performance more than a result but if we are in the mixer with 10 to go we're in with a shout as we have been finishing strong in games to date... think Kerry will nick it though...
