Meath Vs Kerry

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

While the post-mortem to the Mayo game and discussion on focus points for the future continues on the other thread I thought I'd set this up specifically to discuss our upcoming clash with Kerry. Yes it's disappointing not to have anything to play for in terms of progression to the next stage of the competition but as it's our last game of the year and we have one of the best teams in the country coming to our back yard there is still a lot to look forward to on Sunday week. You can be sure that Kerry will want to win to top the group and avoid the Dubs in the semi so I imagine they will be ruthlessly focused on getting the result.

This is not the environment for us to be making wholesale changes to the team so I expect minimal changes from the last two games, injuries aside. It's possible we will be without Lavin and Newman after the knocks picked up on Sunday. Walsh in for Newman should be a straight swap. If Newman is available, I would like to see Walsh in from the start at the expense of Conlan. Assuming Lavin and Newman are out this is the team I would go with:

Colgan

McCoy
McGill
Gallagher

Keogan
Harnan
S. McEntee

Menton
Devine

J. McEntee
McMahon
Campion

O'Sullivan
Walsh
Conlan

Moving Shane McEntee back to the half back line to a positional shuffle due to Lavin's injury and gives Devine an opportunity in midfield. Campion impressed against Donegal off the bench and could thrive with a bit more space against Kerry.

I'm hoping that having a weekend off will give the team an management a chance to stop for air, to get over the disappointment of the last two games and to understand that there is a huge home championship game on the horizon. I have no doubt the lads will be motivated for this one.

I suspect that Andy will reward as many of the panel members that he can for this one . Hope a good crowd turn up ,but I think Kerry will draw a big crowd as they are the aristocrats of football ,and anyone with an interest in seeing them in the flesh will turn up . As the result is irrelevant to us , I think we should use this game as an experience for some of the fringe players . I hope all meath supporters will welcome this Kerry team to PT , as they are the best equipped team to give the dubs a run for it and avoid the dreaded five in a row !

graham Reilly and Mickey Burke will likely be given a run aswell in what would be their last games for meath. They would get a great send off

I wouldn't discount Donegal at all. Against Kerry we saw the best of Murphy McHugh and McBrearty. They played like a team that had just had the shackles taken off and were offered the freedom of Croke Park. Great to see. Most enjoyable game of the Championship so far. And no my name is not Joe Brillo and I am neither a native of Donegal or Derry!

We must put our best team out as score difference can decide the teams that qualify or more likely the finishing order in the group. We need to be seen to approach this game with integrity so sentiment must not come into it. Why? Because we may be in the same boat next year or in future years.

We need to approach this game to win it! I am sure Andy will be looking at lads to see who has it takes to play Division 1 league and to develop into Championship players. From here in it is about building up a winning capability. I would hate to see us treat this game as simply a reward for panel players - we need to develop that winning mentality so that we can stay up in Division 1 next year. That will position is better for another crack at Super 8s with a set of players with greater experience at this level. Beating Kerry in any game is reward in itself!!

Bit hard hit on injured front. Will any of the following play
Brennan?
Lavin?
Newman?
Reilly?
Ryan?

Ryan might be best bet.

Looking forward to the game. I think Mickey Burke should start and Brennan is worth a try in goals. A certain section of the Meath support wont be jeering the Kerry team like they did in 1999 when we were hammering them. Those days are long gone unfortunately and those type of supporters will stay at home.

Ah here...... alot of lads calling for Mickey Burke to start.....he shouldn't even feature for 2 mins, and I see on another thread some lads have him in their shortlist for player of the decade...... a dedicated player but that's the height of it..... I knew we had fallen from the heady days of the 80s and 90s, but Jesus surely we havnt fallen that far.that Burke is our player of the decade.........we need.to have a strong finish to the super 8s, play our best team and bring on our best subs with one eye on next Feb too.... so no time for sentiment.

I'd say both might stick around.I'm sure they would love a crack at division 1 playing the dubs,Kerry,Donegal etc after all their efforts over the years to get there think it might drive them on for another year.If Andy picks them for next year only time will tell but whether you like both of them or not if it is the end for them they should be very proud of what they have done over all the years some huge commitment and time given to the cause.
