The passing of popular Navan resident Jimmy 'Darkie' Browne, who had a lifelong involvement in GAA affairs in Meath, occurred in January. 'Darkie', as he was universally known, played football with Gibbstown, winning a JFC medal in 1968, and was a member of the inaugural Wolfe Tones committee following the club's formation in 1975. His sons - Sean, Tony and Gerry - followed in their father's footsteps and lined out for the Oristown parish club. 'Darkie' was also a well-known referee in the county in his day and, in latter years, acted as an umpire for referees such as Paddy Kavanagh, Gerry McGivney and Tom Lorton. He umpired at the 1985 All-Ireland SFC final between Kerry and Dublin when Paddy Kavanagh had the honour of being the man in the middle. Numerous grandchildren have also represented Wolfe Tones, Simonstown and Navan O'Mahonys.
