Phil was an ardent follower of Gaelic football, particularly the Meath senior football team. During his primary school years in Moyaugher he never missed a day. Phil also had a big interest in athletics, a sport at which his children excelled. His grandson Alan Watters was an outstanding underage footballer with Simonstown.
