On the 27th of September this year, it was sadness that we learned of the death of John Carey. John or Johnny as he was often known was the goalkeeper on the Ratoath team that won the Junior 'A' championship in 1971. That championship victory came towards the end of John's football career. He was born in Belmullet, Co.Mayo and his family moved to Ratoath when John was about ten years old. His brother Pete played alongside him on the Ratoath team for a period. Although not the biggest man he was reported very good dealing with high balls into the square which was a feature of football at the time. He was nimble and 'light on this feet' and even in later life kept himself fit.
