Blackhall Gaels and the wider community were greatly saddened by the loss  of "Sonny" ( Matthew) Carr following  a long illness. Sonny was one of the club's most ardent supporters since it's foundation, a tireless fundraiser, selector and Honorary Life President until his untimely death at the age of 67.

Born in Galway in 1947, his family moved to Meath in 1951. He was to remain primarily a Galway supporter all his life. Sonny attended Rathregan N. S. and St Patrick's Classical School, Navan and got his first job with Ballymacglassen Stud erecting stud railings.  He worked also as a postman and on the family dairy farm until an outbreak of brucellosis forced him to cease dairying. In 1977, along with his brother Padraic , he bought a pub in Summerhill, Dublin and later another one in Park Gate street.

Due to health problems he left the pub trade in the early 90's but continued his varied and widespread interests. He had some success breeding throughbred horses and maintained a keen interest in horse racing all his life. Apart from Gaelic games , he was an authority on every sport, particularly cricket , greyhound racing and Manchester  United. He  loved playing cards and for years  every night was passed with some card game or other, be it 25, whist, poker, or,for the last number of years, bridge.  He was also a deeply religious man, a daily communicant and Minister of the Eucharist. 

Even Sonny would admit he was not a great singer himself but he loved a sing song and knew the words of many ballads, "The Galway Shawl" was his favourite

Sonny was predeceased by nephews Maitiú and Derrick, his brother Padraic and sister Theresa.  He is survived by siblings Marty, Daisy, Maura, Bridie and Michael.  

Blackhall Gaels and the wider community realise what a gem they had living amongst them,a man whose quiet generosity, help and  support were given freely and without conditions. To his family we extend our heartfelt sympathy. He will be sadly missed.
