A native of Oldtown, Johnstown, Johnny lined out at left half-back on the Johnstown team that claimed the U-14 Curran Cup with a 4-6 to 4-1 final win over Boardsmill in Pairc Tailteann. His team-mates on that team included Ollie and Eamonn O'Brien, Martin McGuinness, Pat Burke, Paul Reynolds, Pat Smith and Hugh McMahon. Johnny had a great interest in the fortunes of the Meath team and was also a member of Navan Pitch and Putt club.
