Nobber 2 – 12 (18) St Mary’s 2 – 16 (22)
Nobber left Ludlow Park Syddan empty-handed on Thursday evening last and will feel disappointed having lost out in this entertaining game of championship football. A nice, dry, sunny evening with a sharp breeze both teams gave their all in an entertaining encounter. St Mary’s Donore started the brightest in the opening quarter. They led by 6 v 1 after 15 minutes. Sean Meade with the only score for the black and ambers. Sean Carolans’s charges gradually grew more into the game through scores from Larkin (2) and a further 1 – 1 from the dangerous Sean Meade. Meade was proving hard to handle and finished his goal by turning the St Mary’s defence inside out with his quick thinking and movement into the clubhouse end goals of the ground. Wing forward Conor Owens finished a classy score to the delight of the Nobber faithful and fan favourite Mark Condra got his fist to a Larkin kick to raise yet another white flag for the black and ambers.
Half-time – Nobber 1 – 6 (9) St Mary’s 1 – 10 (13)
The middle third of the field proved a busy area for both sets of players where the majority of the possession was fought for. Youngster and Irish youth basketball star Gustas Pocevicius showed glimpses of his athletic class and promise, vice-captain Mark Condra showed great leadership pushing his teammates on and forward as well as the experienced duo of Paul Meade and Niall Farrell giving everything for the Deesiders. Nobber conceded a goal early on in the second half and there was an uphill battle ahead in terms of cutting the St Mary’s lead.
Sean Carolans’s charges kept the game alive with Owens registering more scores, and corner forward Lorcan McEntee raising a green flag for the Nobber men. Wingback Kian Donohoe was finding himself in promising forward positions during the second half. He converted two beauties of scores something quite similar to Kerry’s Tom O’Sullivan catalogue of outrageous scores. At one stage going into the final few minutes there were only two points between the sides, however the green and red of St Mary’s had enough to hold on to take home the two points on offer.
Next up for Nobber in Round 3 the black and ambers face fellow North Meath side Ballinlough on Friday, September 4 in Moynalty.
