Nobber 4 – 18 (30) Gaeil Colmcille 1 – 9 (12)
Nobber registered only their second win in this year’s Division 4 league campaign against fellow strugglers Gaeil Colmcille on Sunday morning last. In what was a crucial game in terms of giving themselves a chance of avoiding relegation, Derek Walsh’s charges needed a win.
The black and ambers started the brightest with a well-taken score by the hard-working corner forward Colin Clarke. Full forward Dale Larkin kicked a fine two-pointer, followed by a free. This was followed up by another fine two-pointer by corner forward Lorcan McEntee, and McEntee raised another white flag to leave the Nobber men leading by 7 points to no score in the opening 10 minutes. The Kells men grew into the game and registered some points and a goal, but the Deesiders kept moving forward on the scoreboard with further points from Sean Meade, Larkin after a fine Mark Condra assist, and an impressive goal by sharpshooter Sean Meade.
Half-time score – Nobber 1 – 14 (17) Gaeil Colmcille 1 – 3 (6)
Both sides traded scores during the third quarter, with teenager Gustas Pocevicius raising a white flag into the village end goals. Midfielder Conor Owens finished a nice move for the black and ambers, and Larkin continued to pop over scores when given opportunities. In the final quarter, Nobber made sure of the victory with Sean Meade showing his talent and class, twisting and turning the Kells defence inside out. Meade added a further two goals to his tally, along with assisting fellow forward Larkin.
The experienced trio of captain Barry Cassidy, Richie Shields, and Karl Casserly were strong pillars in defence, linking play between defence and attack and pushing their fellow teammates forward. The towering figure of Mark Condra used his strength and guile at various stages throughout. Nobber arguably kept their best performance of an overall disappointing league campaign to the end; however, they will take the positives from this performance and look ahead to a hugely important game against fellow North Meath side Carnaross to avoid relegation to the Division 5 ranks.
Next up for Nobber is a relegation play-off against Carnaross. Date, time, and venue to be confirmed.
