Trim captain Kit O'Donnell receives the Jubilee Cup from Meath Hurling Board Chairman Finian Englishby

Sad to report the passing of former Meath Hurling Board PRO and Chairman (1985- 1989) Finian Englishby. Finian also served as a selector to the Meath senior hurling team alongside coach Dessie Ferguson.

Having played hurling and football with various clubs Finian turned his hand to management and guided Wolfe Tones to an Intermediate Hurling Championship title in 1992 and the following year they made it all the way to the SHC decider.

The club took to social media to pay tribute to their former manager.

It was with great sadness that Cumann Bhulf Tón learned of the death of Finian Englishby. Finian had a life long association with Meath GAA and served with distinction as Chairman of the County Hurling Committee.

His hard work in promoting hurling in the county was rewarded with Meath capturing the All Ireland B Hurling Title in 1993. Finian and his family lived in Kilberry for a number of years and during this time he took on the mantle of manager of the Tones hurlers.

Success in the Intermediate final of 1992 v Longwood was followed by an appearance in the Senior final of 1993.This reulted in a heartbreaking one point loss for a youthful Tones team. The disappointment for Finian and his team was felt for many years after. Finian was dedicated to the team and guided them with enthusiasm, kindness and respect. He has written his name large in the history of Tones hurling and holds a special place in the hearts of all those who played for him.

To his devoted wife Mary and his family we offer our thanks for the support given to Finian while he was manager and our sympathy on his deep felt loss. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh ag Finian.
