Seneschalstown's Shane Mulvaney celebrates

Skryne 2-21 Seneschalstown 2-15

A late scoring burst from Skryne saw them edge Seneschalstown in a competitive local derby in this final round fixture of the Waterways Environmental Ltd. Football League Division 10. Seneschasltown lead the game entering the final ten minutes but injuries and lack of substitutes caught up with them as the Tara men, who travelled with a big squad had the legs to finish stronger and take the two League points on offer.

Seneschasltown got off to a quick start when inside the opening minute, the returning Kyle Hosie popped over the opening score which was followed by a Ryan O’Dowd point from play. Skryne kicked their opener in the fifth minute but the home side’s strong start continued with further points from Jamie Barry (free), Hosie and Niall McCabe as Seneschalstown lead by 0-05 to 0-01 after eight minutes.

Skryne however would enjoy the good spell over the next ten minutes as four points in a row brought them level but Niall McCabe kicked a two pointer to restore the home sides advantage. Again, Skryne answered at the other end with a single point effort but Seneschasltown were given a fortuitous boost in the 25th minute.

Teean Cummins had the ball centrally as he made his way across the 45’. He played a simple ball to Shane Mulvany who was unmarked inside the old D’.   His shot was mishit but the keeper misread the flight of the ball and it ended up in the Skryne net which moved Seneschasltown four ahead. Skryne halved the deficit by the break with two more points as the scoreboard read 1-07 to 0-08.

Skryne carried their momentum into the early stages of the second half and drew level inside two minutes with consecutive scores. Seneschalstown hit back in stern fashion. John Smith, now operating further out the pitch looked to be running out of options outside the two point arc before unleashing a booming effort towards goal. The ball hung in their air for an eternity before Éamon Barry raised both arms to signal for a two pointer.

Smith was enjoying his new lease of life and after the visitors drew level once more, Niall McCabe sent a long ball in the direction of Smith who had briefly positioned himself at the edge of the square. Smith grabbed the ball at the second time of asking and shrugged off the challenge of a defender to squeeze the ball into the net at the near post, leaving it 2-09 to 0-12 after 41 minutes.

The tit for tat nature continued for the next few minutes, Jamie Barry answered Skryne’s latest riposte with a two point effort from play. However, Seneschalstown were beginning to struggle with injuries and had to drop from 15 a side, coupled with Skryne’s ability to run in numerous substitutes as they took over for the final 10 minutes. They kicked four points on the spin before crashing in two goals in the 56th and 57th minutes which took the game away from Seneschalstown.

The now depleted hosts kept battling away and a fine two pointer from Kyle Hosie kept their scoreboard ticking over. As the clock ticked into injury time Jamie Barry and Peter Tierney each kicked fine points but it wasn’t enough as the Tara men ran out six point victors.

After scoring a probable career high of 1-02 in a single game, John Smith deservedly picked up Mick Dillon’s Lucozade Sport Man of the Match award after a fine performance despite the defeat.
