Trim 2-12 Meath Hill 0-09
Meath Hill made the journey to Trim on Sunday morning looking to build momentum following a solid victory over Curraha last weekend. However, a disappointing second half showing, saw the home side run out comfortable winners in this Division 2 clash.
Trim started strongly, winning the throw-in and notching the game’s opening score after a period of patient build-up. Meath Hill created a couple of promising attacks in response but were unable to make them count on the scoreboard. Despite that, Peter Griffin stood out in the early stages with some superb defending and crucial blocks, helping to keep the game within reach. Trim pushed three points ahead, punishing missed opportunities at the other end before Andy Monaghan finally got Meath Hill off the mark with a sweet strike off his left. Dominic Yorke then made amends for an earlier miss with a well-taken two-point effort, drawing the sides level midway through the half. Trim responded with two quick-fire scores, but Kyle Martin clipped a fine point to keep Meath Hill in touch. James Mooney, who had been a driving force throughout, was rewarded for his direct running as he split the posts to level matters once again. Jack McMahon and Mooney added late scores to leave the sides deadlocked at the interval: Trim 0-07, Meath Hill 0-07.
The second half belonged to Trim. They again won the throw-in and pointed early before a jinking run from one of their forwards led to a well-finished goal. A major turning point followed when Ryan Owens was harshly sent off after an off-the-ball incident that also saw a Trim player black-carded. Video footage reviewed afterwards suggests the red card was undeserved, adding further frustration to the Meath Hill camp. Trim capitalised fully on the extra space, bagging a second goal and adding four more points to help the on their way to victory. While Dominic Yorke added a pair of scores to his tally, Meath Hill struggled to find the same attacking fluency they had shown in the first half. Despite their efforts, the Hill were unable to mount a comeback, and the match ended with a 2-12 to 0-09 defeat. While the final scoreline may suggest a one-sided affair, Meath Hill were well in contention for large parts of the game. However, second half errors, coupled with a key refereeing decision, proved pivotal.
Next up for Meath Hill is Rathkenny at home on Thursday, 19th June at 8pm, in what will be a crucial fixture as the team looks to bounce back.
