Celebration time for Wolfe Tones at Rathcairn

This June Bank Holiday weekend will live long in the memory for Meath clubs Clann na nGael and Wolfe Tones

The Athboy/Rathcairn combination who were also the competition hosts claimed the Comórtas Peil na Gaeltachta Junior Football Championship final after a 2-21 to 0-15 win over Naomh Náille today at Rathcairn.

Niall McLoughlin’s men led at the break 1-10 to 0-9 Sean Óg Ó Tiarnáin with the goal. The Donegal side kept in touch in the second half until Éamon Óg Ó Donnchadha got in for the hosts second goal. Man of the Match Cormac MacGabhann kicked six points for the winners. 

Clann na nGael scorers: C. MacGabhann 0-6, T. Ó Dubhghaill 0-5, S. Ó Tiarnáin 1-1, B. Ó Corcaíoch 0-4, D. Ó Suan 0-3, É. Ó Donnchadha 1-0, D. Ó Gríofa 0-1, D. Ó Dochartaigh 0-1.

Two hours later at the same venue Wolfe Tones staged a dramatic fightback to claim the Comórtas Peil na Gaeltachta Senior Football Championship title with three points to spare over An Tearmann.

With 47 minutes gone the Donegal side were in complete control leading 3-12 to 0-8 but the Meath side showed great determination in the final quarter and outscored their opponents 2-10 to 0-0, the goals coming from full forward Fiachra Ward and Player of the Match Oisin Martin. Martin’s green flag levelled the game and the recent Feis Cup winners added three points in injury time to seal a brilliant win on a 2-18 to 3-12 scoreline.
