Meath got up and running early in the group stages of the All-Ireland senior football championship thanks to a 1-13 to 0-12 win over Cork at Pairc Tailteann this afternoon.

Robbie Brennan’s men bounced back from the disappointment of their Leinster final loss to Louth a fortnight ago by seeing off the Rebels on home turf, where Jordan Morris’s goal in the 31st minute was the catalyst for their victory.

The visitors had run up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead after the opening 25 minutes, but would see it surrendered after a Matthew Costello point was backed up by a neat finish from Morris and a point from skipper Eoghan Frayne would have the Royals up by 1-5 to 0-5 at half-time.

The Leesiders landed the first two scores of the restart via a Matty Taylor point and Colm O’Callaghan’s two-pointer to square things up by the 38th minute, but Costello got the home side motoring again and the points of James Conlon, Morris and Sean Coffey made it a five-point game.

The Munster men reduced their arrears to the minimum again, with Mark Cronin and Chris Og Jones among their scorers in the closing quarter, but Meath were able to see out the first round win as Costello (2, 1 free) and Conlon raised their last three white flags.
