ST. MICHAELS v OLDCASTLE
St. Michaels 0-19, Oldcastle 4-14
Four opening half goals proved decisive for Oldcastle on their home turf of Millbrook on Saturday evening last.
The home side opened the scoring with a point after only 40 seconds but top scorer for St. Michaels Gearóid O'Malley made it level pegging a minute later. The scoring continued for the home side as they followed up with 2-3 without reply. O'Malley was in top form and hit two 2 pointers with Daniel Murphy, Paddy Fitzsimons and Brian O'Reilly reducing the deficit to just two minors at the end of the first quarter. Matthew Halpin finished off a good move up-field with a point while a great solo run the length of the pitch by Kuba Bidzinski was finished off by Declan Reilly. However as half time loomed Oldcastle added a further 2-4, the goals coming in the 26th and 27th minutes, the latter from the penalty spot for a 4-9 to 0-10 interval lead.
Oldcastle hit the opener in the second half and followed up with a converted free and a minor from play. However St. Michaels began to make early inroads into their lead buoyed by another six minors from O'Malley and points from Reilly (2) and Fitzsimons (1) but their luck ran out when the Oldcastle keeper Conor McHugh pulled of a fine penalty save from O'Malley in the 57th minute. Credit must go also to Graham Dooner in the St. Michaels goals who kept his side in contention when pulling off some fine saves especially in the second half.
