Navan O’Mahony’s 1-13 Oldcastle 1-11
A narrow win over Oldcastle left Navan O’Mahony’s with three wins from three in the Div 2 FL, played in a sunny Paddy O’Brien Park on Saturday afternoon.
The wind was blowing towards the clubhouse corner, and any benefit from it went to Oldcastle in the opening half. The visitors were quick to get going, missing the target narrowly within twenty seconds of the throw-in.
The first score came in the third minute, when Evan Coffey found Craig Munnelly with a good pass and the latter split the posts. Less than a minute later, a good play between Duggie Dillon, Mike O’Reilly and Oisín O’Brien culminated in a pass to Ronan Clarke who found the net.
Almost ten minutes passed without score until Dillon pointed from play, after his brother Christy set him up with a handpass. Oldcastle responded in turn with a pointed free. At the opposite end of the pitch, Dillon again raised a white flag. With ten minutes remaining, Oldcastle kicked a point and followed this with a two-pointer from play three minutes later. Another two pointer from Oldcastle and two points from Robbie Keelaghan left the sides level in injury time. A high ball into the square was punched to the net, giving Oldcastle a three-point advantage at the interval.

Keelaghan opened the scoring for the second half, kicking a free in the third minute. Five minutes later, Clarke looked to be through for a score but was fouled, with Keelaghan again accurate on the resulting free. A loose ball on the square was volleyed by O’Brien in the tenth minute, going over the bar to leave the sides level, before the same player gave O’Mahony’s the lead a minute later.
Oldcastle equalised once more on the halfway mark, before Brian Dillon gave a good pass to Coffey to take the lead again. Keelaghan pointed a free to leave two in it, but with five minutes remaining, the visitors had reduced their deficit to a single point. The sides exchanged points with Munnelly scoring for O’Mahony’s and still a point separated them in injury time.
Good scoring opportunities were denied for the North Meath side by good interventions from O’Mahony’s defensive line, including two Dillons, Conor Brady, Louis Collins, Darragh Murphy, Jack Quinn and netminder Jamie O’Reilly. Substitute Paddy Yourell made no mistake in firing over a point, which proved to be the last score of the game leaving O’Mahony’s with a two point victory.
