Dunboyne 0-15 Kildalkey 1-8
On Monday night Kildalkey’s third team took on a strong Dunboyne team in Dunboyne in Division 4 of the Hurling League and after a spirited second half just fell short by 4 points despite a late onslaught on the Dunboyne goals.
With the time springing forward at the weekend and the weather improving evening games made a welcome return giving supporters something to look forward to for the coming months.
Kildalkey missing a few key players started well with Arron Traynor hitting a good score from play but the home side got a foothold in the game and took over for the half hitting a few nice points as kildalkey stood off them and gave them too much space.
Conor Barnwell was accurate from frees and hit the next 4 for his team and Adam o Brien strike brought his team to 6 points but the host side finished with 11 to lead by 5 at the break.
Kildalkey needed more work rate for the second half and indeed upped a gear and with the defence making a few brilliant blocks catches and interceptions in particular Paul Fagan Liam Carroll and Enda Fitzgerald as they kept Dunboyne to 1 point for the first 20 minutes but just couldn’t get the vital scores needed to close the gap as the ball went left or right of the posts although Conor Barnwell got them going again with a great effort from play and a free but 2 frees for Dunboyne pushed them on again until Barnwell cut in for a goal to bring his team to within 3 points but the hosts pushed it out to 4 again a couple of frees and a 65 were dropped into the square as Kildalkey searched for a goal but to no avail.
A hugely spirited second half will give Kildalkey encouragement but ultimately 14 wides to 5 was the difference and they’ll need to steady up in front of the posts for the next day but can’t be faulted for their second half effort but Dunboyne deservedly won on the day.
