Meath 4-10 Westmeath 0-10

Meath made a winning start to their Leinster Minor Football Championship campaign with this four goal win over Westmeath at a wet and windy Páirc Tailteann.

The home side played with the wind blowing into the O’Mahony’s end in the first half. Adam McEvoy gave Meath a great start with a goal. Stephen Cahill, Nathan Reilly and Charlie Gallagher raised white flags before Gallagher kicked the games first two pointer to put Joe Cowley’s men in control. Will Scahill pointed twice for the visitors but a brace from Reilly left Meath going to the dressing room at the break 1-9 to 0-2 in front.

Westmeath, now with the elements, began to eat into that lead. Scahill (2) and Finn Higgins pointed to narrow the lead inside the opening ten minutes. Reilly knocked any hopes of a revival soon after when getting in for Meath’s second goal. Sean Whittaker kicked Westmeath’s first two pointer of the game with seven minutes remaining but soon after substitute Robbie Johnson had the Royals well on the road to victory with two quick fire goals, one from the penalty spot after a foul on Cillian Murphy.

Sean Keegan closed out the scoring with another two pointer for the Lake County men before referee Dan Stynes blew the full time whistle.

Meath travel to Kildare for round 2 while Westmeath take on Longford.
