Syddan 2-09 St. Vincent’s 0-14
St. Vincent’s made the trip to Syddan for the second round of the Tailteann Cup on Sunday.
It was the home side who had the initial momentum. However, their first shot, from a free, was wide of the mark. They did take the lead with a fisted point shortly after. St. Vincent’s were wide of the mark themselves from a free. CJ Tuite denied the advancing Syddan attacker and from the break forward Matthew Tuite was fouled. Nigel Hand slotted over the free to get St. Vincent’s on the board. In and end-to-end start to the game, Syddan pointed from play before St. Vincent’s drew level with a another free from Nigel Hand after 10 minutes. The rest of the first half was dominated by the men in maroon. A great break forward from Conor Harford was slotted over by Matthew Tuite to give the visitors the lead. A lovely move forward was slotted over by Gary Tuite after he was found in space by Shance Caffrey. Conor O’Brien took advantage when fouled with a solo-and-go, and he added another point from play. Another quickly take sol-and-go by Kevin McEnerney saw a ball floated in towards goal from Ryan Hand, where Adam Andrews flick on was just denied by the keeper. Matthew Tuite and Nigel Hand both pointed frees to extend the lead for St. Vincent’s to 5 points. Gary Tuite added the final score of the half with a point from play.
Half Time: Syddan 0-02 St. Vincent’s 0-08
The home side had the assistance of the wind in the second half and put it to good use with a 2-pointer from a free, before kicking a couple of wides. Conor Harford slotted over a point from play after a lovely flick on ball from Conor White. The home side responded with a point from play. Nigel Hand brought his personal tally to 4 points with a lovely score from play. St. Vincent’s had opportunities to stretch their lead. Adam Andrews shot on goal was just the wrong side of the post. Conor White delivered a perfect ball into Andy McEntee, but his shot on goal was straight at the Syddan keeper. Syddan added a 2-pointer from a free before drawing level with a goal. St. Vincent’s responded with a pointed free from Matthew Tuite and a point from play by Conor Harford, following some great buildup play from Adam Andrews and Conor O’Brien.
Just when it looked like St. Vincent’s had weathered the storm, Syddan struck a hammer blow with a second goal from play. They added a point from play and one from a free to stretch their lead to 3 points. A 2-pointer from a free by Matthew Tuite ended the scoring and left St. Vincent’s on the wrong side of a 1-point game.
