Seneschalstown 0-13 Ratoath 2-11
Despite a more consistent 60 minute performance, a battling Seneschalstown went down to a four point defeat to Ratoath in Seán Eiffe Park. Still fielding a very young team, Seneschasltown produced a performance which was another level up on their first round game and they were in contention the whole way through. There was a chilly breeze blowing into the clubhouse corner of the back pitch in Ratoath and Seneschalstown played into it in the opening half.
Backed by the elements the three time Senior Champions made a blistering start and threatened to leave Seneschalstown in their wake when striking for 1-01 inside the opening two minutes. However Seneschalstown began to get a foothold and when Collie Scanlon hoisted over a fine score in the seventh minute it appeared to settle David Hosie’s men. Cormac Carolan got forward from centre half back to kick another point for the vistiors and the number seemed to be enjoying himself when he kicked another after 14 minutes after Ratoath had a score of their own.
The home side kicked a two pointer but Seneschalstown were beginning to enjoy a spell of dominance and two points in a row from the boot of Cathal Hickey (one free) and wing back Rob Wogan had Seneschalstown within one but a second Ratoath goal just before the break threatened to take away Seneschalstown’s momentum but they did have the last say of the half when Cian Hosie did a lot of the hard work himself to create space and kick over Seneschalstown’s seventh point. The home side lead by four at the break.
The sides traded points at the outset of the second period with Alan Mulvany kicking over for the men in yellow before Eoin Finnegan turned on a sixpence on the 20 metre line to curl a well measured shot between the uprights. Unfortunately Finnegan would be forced to depart shortly afterwards but Seneschalstown’s positive opening to the second period continued in the 38th minute when Bradley Kirwan sold a defender a dummy along the endline to score from close range before Ratoath eventually got back on the scoreboard in the 45th minute.
Seneschalstown had a glorious opportunity to level matters in the 47th minute when Cian Hosie squared a ball across to Jamie Kirwan but unfortunately his shot flashed over rather than under the bar from a Seneschalstown point of view.
That let off for Ratoath only seemed to spur them on and three points in a row left five points between the sides again by the 53rd minute but Seneschalstown did manage to give then another shot at getting a result when goalkeeper Jamie Norris came up the pitch to kick a free from outside the two point arc which went over via the crossbar, Seneschalstown’s first such score at Senior level under the new rules. However the last score went the way of the home side as they ran out four point winners in an entertaining contest.
Seneschalstown have one game left in the competition in Round 3 when they play St. Peter’s Dunboyne before attention will turn to the start of the leagues.
