St. Michaels 1-09, Navan O'Mahonys 2-18
St. Michaels whose opening round against Blackhall Gaels was postponed due to a bereavement got this Corn Na Boinne outing off to a losing start in a bitterly cold Carlanstown on Thursday evening.
Despite the low temperatures both teams gave it their best and a fine contest ensued even though the identity of the would be winners was as clear as crystal midway through the opening half when O'Mahonys bagged their second major.
The visitors hit the ground running with two pointers and their opening goal after ten minutes. Declan Reilly pulled a goal back for the home side on six minutes but they failed to register their next score, a point until the 21st minute from the boot of Cian McFadden. A good upfield move involving Ciaran O'Reilly and Gearoid O'Malley resulted in the latter tapping over to leave his side trailing by 1-2 to 2-11 at the break.
The young St. Michaels lads worked tirelessly to keep in touch playing with the aid of the strong wind in the second half and while they chipped away at the scoreboard with some neat points from messrs O'Malley and Reilly, the game was proving to be a major challenge as the O'Mahonys lads continued to increase the gap between the sides and bag the two points on offer.
