Kian Campbell retains possession for Clonard during the MFC Division 4 final at Lomans Park Trim

Clonard 1-10 Duleek/Bellewstown 0-9

Clonard added a minor championship title to their July league title on Saturday when they overcame a strong Duleek/Bellewstown side in near perfect conditions at the pristine St.Loman’s Park, Trim. PHOTOS

The winners started the sharpest racing to a four-point lead which included a brace of points from Kayden Plunkett before Duleek/Bellewstown registered their first score on 17 minutes through Daniel Scully.

Clonard responded with overs from Kian Campbell and a second from full forward Daniel Johns before another rally from the opposition left the minimum between the sides at half time, Clonard 0-6 Duleek/Bellewstown 0-5.

The East Meath side started the second half like they ended the first with two more points giving them the lead for the first time in the game.

Points were traded at both ends once again before Dean Carroll found the net for the game’s only goal on 56 minutes after a clever through ball from Campbell.

Predictably, the dogged and hard working Duleek/Bellewstown side responded with another score from the strong running Glen Callaghan but failed to find the net after a late scramble in the large square denied by some fine defensive work from Alan Hannon and Niall McHugh.

Clonard subsequently broke down the field in numbers resulting in an insurance score from midfielder Aaron Scott which was followed by the final whistle, sparking celebrations for the small South Meath outfit.

County Minor board secretary David Campbell presented the cup to Clonard captain, Niall McHugh, marking an impressive league and championship double this year, Clonard’s first minor success in over a decade.
