Dunshaughlin Royal Gaels 1-10 Dunboyne 0-10

Having won their first Meath LGFA senior football championship title last year Dunshaughlin Royals Gaels made it title number 2 with this narrow win over Dunboyne at Pairc Tailteann.

The defending champions were on the scoreboard first, half back Karla Kealy sending over a well worked point. Annie Moffat opened Dunboyne’s account and from there till the 30th minute the former 3 in a row winners dominated. Saoirse Quinn, Emma Duggan (4) and Caragh McCarthy pointed to give them a 0-7 to 0-2 lead heading into injury time.

Royal Gaels had created goal chances in the opening 30 but had to wait until two minutes into injury time to raise the games only green flag. Meadhbh Byrne saw her penalty kick saved by Dunboyne keeper Alison O’Sullivan but the county star was on hand to finish the rebound to the net. Shane Farrelly’s charges despite not playing well went in at the break only down two points, 0-7 to 1-2.

Dunshaughlin came out in the second half a more composed side. Dunboyne were relying on Emma Duggan for scores. The former All Star was their only scorer in the second half, one from play and two from frees. By the 15th minute Royal Gaels were on level terms with points from Niamh McEntee and Niamh O’Sullivan (3). With ten minutes remaining substitute Ciara Gorman put Royal Gaels in front and further scores from Laura Murray and Gorman made sure that the Joe Breen Cup stayed in Dunshaughlin for a second year.

After the game Meath LGFA Chairperson Colm McManus presented the Player of the Match Award to Meadhbh Byrne and the Joe Breen Cup to Royal Gaels captain Sadhbh O’Muiri.
