Ian Donoghue breaks out of defence for Carnaross during the Premier 7 FC final against Trim at Athboy

Carnaross 0-12 Trim 0-08

Carnaross were crowned Premier Division 7 champions after a gruelling battle with Trim, played in the immaculate surroundings of Clann na nGael's pitch in Athboy.

Carnaross had the wind advantage in the first half but struggled to utilise it in the first 15 minutes. Both defences were on top with scoring chances at a premium. Carnaross were outworking their opponents with Porter and Casserly working very hard out of possesion. Shane O’Reilly broke the deadlock with a fine effort from distance. Shane excelled throughout the game scoring 3 fantastic points from play. It was lovely to see his father, Gerry, watching on with pride as he continues his recovery from a health scare. Wing back, John Reilly,  raided forward to extend the lead with one of his trademark lung bursting runs. Paddy Morris kicked two first half frees as he constantly took the game to the Trim opponents with his direct running. Oisín Farrelly kicked two great points from play which stretched the lead out to 7 points to 2 at half time. The Ross defenders were on top with Aidan Lynch, Cian Yore and  Ian Donoghue impressing. Unfortunately for Carnaross and Aidan, he suffered a nasty looking knee injury just before the half time whistle. We wish him well in his recovery.

The second half was a real war of attrition. Trim were exerting their presence on the game with some physical tackling. They began to use the breeze well to narrow the advantage to 3 points. Carnaross had Conor Kenny in goals to thank after he saved a one on one despite not having his gloves on. He'd taken them off to change his boots after the leather has burst on them. Brian Comaskey was moved out to midfield and he made some vital catches when the game was in the melting pot. His midfield partner Tommy Brady won numerous possessions in the third quarter. Oisín Ennis kicked a point in each half included a wordlie in the second to keep Trim at bay. His wonderful score was second only to Shane O’Reilly's effort from near the end line. Trim needed a goal and they bombarded the Carnaross square with ball. The experienced Nugent brothers, Paddy and Thomas, together with their apprentice, Feidhlim Farrelly, snuffed out any danger. The final score of the game summed up the make up of our team. The ageless Brian Comaskey marked the kickout before laying it off to 18 year old, Paddy Morris, who ran 40 yards before sending over the insurance score.

It was fitting that Thomas Nugent captained the side as he is a natural born leader both on and off the field. As he lifted the Oliver Harding Cup, his two adoring sons looked up at their daddy briming with pride, encapsulating everything that is right within the GAA community.

Thanks to the management team of Ollie Farrelly,  Alan Stephens and Emmet Daly as well as the wonderful supporters who painted Athboy maroon and amber this morning.
