Nobber 3 – 11 (20) Cortown 1 – 11 (14)

Nobber’s reserve side made the trip across the North Meath countryside to face Cortown on Saturday afternoon in the Premier Championship Division 8 final decider in Drumbaragh. Having been unbeaten so far in the competition and qualifying in top position of the group the black and ambers were determined to bring home the silverware on offer in what proved to be an entertaining, and action-packed game played between two competitive sides.

Credit to the Drumbaragh Emmets club for having their facilities in excellent condition for spectators and players alike. A slightly cold, yet dry September afternoon where there were plenty of scores shared between both sides. Nobber started the brightest with an early score from wing back Brendan Heffernan. Both sides traded possession within the first quarter, with Cortown dispatching a penalty into the clubhouse end goals. Nobber responded swiftly with the pacey Joe Tierney finishing a fine team move to the back of the net. The black and ambers enjoyed winning possession around the middle of the park with the experienced Alan Farrell, and majestic Thomas Murtagh. The Deesiders’ raised another couple of green flags before the half-time break by the towering figure of Gavin Farrelly at full forward, and the youthful Jamie Duffy in the corner. Both contributed on the scoreboard with fine points, along with a Tierney free to leave the Thomas Tierney/Benny Owens/Thomas McCormack managed side in a healthy position going into the break.

The black and ambers started the second half brightly with a dashing run from midfielder Murtagh who coolly slotted over the bar. The game proved physical, hard-hitting, and on the edge at times. The Nobber defence stood firm throughout, with Andrew O’Brien rolling back the years, making his presence felt, and making life difficult for his opponents at the edge of the square. O’Brien’s determination shone throughout the team with fellow defenders Gerry Campbell, Gordon Weldon, and Brendan Heffernan all playing prominent roles. Tricky Tierney raised another white flag through a placed ball. Former Meath GAA Minor and Under 21 star Gavin Farrelly reminded supporters of the older days, causing havoc in the Cortown defence, grabbing every ball kicked into him, and finishing some fine scores into the clubhouse end goals. Cortown kept battling but to Nobber’s credit they were determined not to let in a goal to give their opponents momentum in the game. The North Meath men finished strongly with scores from Tierney, the hugely influential Brian Farrell and fearless Farrelly.

Well done to all the team and management for all their hard work and picking up the Premier Championship Division 8 Championship Trophy. After the game Nobber clubman Gene Smith presented the cup to proud Nobber captain Jonny “Wifi, I love West Ham” Donohoe.
