Westmeath captain Kevin Maguire has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Maguire made his senior championship debut back in 2010 when the Lake County lost out to Louth in the Leinster SFC semi-finals.

Over the next decade and more, the Caulry clubman would be an integral part of Westmeath’s defence and would eventually become team captain in 2021.

A year later, the Lake men would capture the inaugural Tailteann Cup after defeating Cavan in the competition’s final at Croke Park, where Maguire made an inspirational block down the home stretch to help his team over the line.

He’d get to lift silverware again this past season when the Leinster side claimed Division 3 honours with victory over Down, although their captain would be injured for the final at Croke Park.

Speaking after his club Caulry defeated Tang in a SFC group game yesterday, Maguire confirmed that he has played his last game in a Westmeath jersey.

“I’ve said it to most of my teammates in Westmeath at this stage, but I’ll be hanging up the boots this year with Westmeath,” he stated.

“Fourteen years I’ve been playing with Westmeath, so I’ve a long stint done,” he added in an interview broadcast via Westmeath GAA’s social media channels.

“Delighted with how long I got, and most of it fairly injury-free. It’s been an amazing experience, but the last year or two has been hard on the body with a few injuries and I think it’s come to that time where I’d like to hang the boots up.”
