Mixed fortunes for Under 16 footballers

Cillian Murphy retains possession under pressure for Meath during the Gerry Reilly Cup clash against Kildare at Moynalty

The Meath Under 16 football squads enjoyed mixed fortunes in round 2 of the Tedd Webb Cup and Gerry Reilly Cup competitions yesterday.

The Gerry Reilly Cup panel made the short journey to Moynalty for their clash with Kildare.

The visitors came out on top in a very entertaining encounter 5-7 to 1-14.

Meath got a great start with points from Charlie Gallagher and Jesse O’Rourke but for the remaining twenty minutes of the opening half Kildare dominated and went in at the break 2-5 to 0-4 in front. 

It was a different Meath in the second half. Gallagher landed four points before corner back Dylan Meehan scored a goal and a minute later O’Rourke had the game tied up 1-9 to 2-6 after 18 minutes.

Gallagher (2), Evan Yore, Eoin Gilsenan and Omokorede Otubanjo opened up a five point lead as the game entered the last five minutes. Kildare found another gear and registered 3-1 before Joey Curran blew the final whistle and record a five point win.

The Webb Cup squad made the long journey to Toomevara worthwhile and recorded a 3-6 to 0-13 win over Kerry.
