It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of a true legend of our county, Christopher 'Kit' Mitchell.
Kit, a man synonymous with the spirit and passion of the GAA in Meath, left us after a lifetime dedicated to hurling, Gaelic games, and our community.
As the chairperson of Killyon G.A.A. Club, Kit's leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the club's success. His contributions extended beyond the administrative roles, as he was a formidable player, an inspiring coach, and a mentor to many. Kit's dedication to the club and the broader GAA community in Meath was unparalleled.
His loss leaves a void that will be hard to fill. Kit's legacy, however, will continue to inspire and guide us. His commitment to hurling, his love for the community, and his tireless efforts to promote the values of the GAA are benchmarks for us all.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Kit's family, friends, his GAA Club, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Kit was inducted into Meath GAA's 'Hall of Fame' in 2013
Congratulations to Killyon stalwart Kit Mitchell who was the deserving recipient of Meath GAA's 'Hall of Fame' award for 2013 at last Saturday night's presentation evening in the Ardboyne Hotel.
MC Brendan Cummins outlined his extraordinary contribution to Killyon and Meath hurling.
Kit Mitchell is synonymous with Killyon GAA club, there is a long tradition of hurling in Killyon who won the senior hurling championship as far back as 1919.
"The club was struggling until a revival got underway in the late 1950s and Kit Mitchell was the man that kept things going, he played in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s."
Kit is also believed to have togged out for Killyon as recently as 2009 when only 14 players showed up for a league game against Kilmessan!
There was a standing ovation for Kit as he made his way up to accept the 'Hall of Fame' award from chairman Conor Tormey.
"I never thought I would see this day, earlier this year I wasn't well and I was really struggling, but thank God I've come around now," he said.
"I have to thank my brother and my sister-in-law who looked after me so well during my illness. And to my club Killyon and all the good people who have helped me over the years, this award is a tribute to all those people and I'm pleased to accept it.
"The Killyon club had some great years, club-of-the-year on three occasions, I had some great times over the years.
"Indeed I had many memorable battles at Co Board meetings, some with people who are here tonight, Fintan Ginnity, Brendan Dempsey and many others, but when the battle was over we were able to work together and get on with business and I thank them for that.
"Over the past few months I've been heartened by the amount of good wishes that I have received from so many people and I want to publicly acknowledge that now."
