Cavan and Meath move into Tailteann Cup quarter-finals after third consecutive wins

Cavan and Meath advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup after recording their third wins on the bounce respectively.
Runners-up last year, Mickey Graham’s Cavan side were in cruise control at the end as they scored an emphatic 2-25 to 2-9 victory over Offaly at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
Crosserlough flyer Brandon Boylan (2-2) netted both goals for the Breffni men who ed by 1-11 to 1-4 at the halfway stage and they’d widen the margin considerably in the second-half, with Joe Maher coming off the bench to net a consolation goal for Offaly.
In Parnell Park, Meath edged their battle against Down by 1-11 to 1-9 for to ensure their place in the last eight.
The Royals scored a 10th minute penalty through Jordan Morris as they looked to gain an early foothold in the capital but would only go in at the break leading 1-4 to 0-6.
Daniel Guinness levelled for the Mourne men early in the restart but they’d be made to rue their wastefulness over the 70 minutes, tallying 17 wides in total.
The game was all square in 1-8 apiece when Meath substitute Daithi McGowan steered the Leinster side back in front with a ‘45’ and frees late on from McGowan and Donal Lenihan would seal a third win on the bounce for Colm O’Rourke’s charges.
The results see Offaly and Down both entering the competition’s preliminary quarter-final stage, while a late 1-17 to 2-14 draw for Laois against London means that the O’Moore men now await tomorrow’s third round results before learning their fate.
London looked to have pulled off the upset at Parnell Park, where they netted an Enda Lynn penalty with 10 minutes remaining, but Billy Sheehan’s side hung in and it was a late point from former League of Ireland goalkeeper Niall Corbet that earned them a share of the spoils.
Tipperary are in the same situation as Laois after their 0-17 to 1-13 win against Waterford earlier today at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, where Kevin Fahey provided them with the insurance point, securing a third placed finish in Group 2 behind Meath and Down.
