Tailteann Cup: Late points secure quarter final place for Royals

Meath 1-11 Down 1-9

Meath made it three wins from three outings to seal their place in the Tailteann Cup quarter final with this two point win over Down at Parnell Park.

Jack O’Connor got the scoreboard working with a fine individual point but by the 7th minute Down were 0-3 to 0-1 in front with scores from Liam Kerr (2) and Pat Havern.

Jordan Morris put Meath back in front with a goal from the penalty spot after a foul on Ronan Jones.

Colm O’Rourke’s men went in at the break leading by the minimum 1-4 to 0-6, Mathew Costello giving his side the lead in injury time.

With ten minutes gone in the second half Down were back in front, 1-7 to 1-5, thanks to an Odhran Murdock goal.

As the game entered the closing stages a share of the spoils looked on the cards Meath 1-9 Down 1-9.

But late points from Daithi McGowan from a 45 and Donal Lenihan gave Meath their third victory and a place in the quarter final at home in two weeks time.
