Andy Moran wasn’t happy with the decision which led to Niall Morgan converting a late winning two-point free for Tyrone against Mayo.

Mayo had one foot in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals before Aidan O’Shea was adjudged by referee Brendan Cawley to have fouled Michael McKernan, and dead-ball specialist Morgan did the rest from outside the arc. Mayo now play host to Meath in Round 3 of the All-Ireland SFC, while Tyrone are straight into the last-eight.

“I haven’t seen it back, but that wasn’t a free,” the Mayo boss complained.

“Once you carried it into traffic there you weren’t getting a free. And he didn’t seem to call the free for the initial free. He seemed to call it for the next one which was a bit strange. It is what is.

“Lads would say we got the rub of the green at other times. You are now beginning to see the new game in its full flourish. This weekend has been the tell of it. If you are a millimetre off here and not doing the right things you are going to get beaten. It’s as simple as that.”

Moran added on a positive note: “I thought we did really well, boys fighting for the jersey and going after it.

“For the second game in-a-row, the boys put absolutely everything on to the field and sometimes you just get unlucky and come out the wrong side of it. That’s what happened today.

“Sam Callinan has a chance going through on goal, does he? Is the goal on? The two-point free I thought was quite soft.

“But listen, these games ebb and flow. These games go through phases and sometimes you’re just unfortunate to come out the wrong side of it.”
