Mark McHugh thinks it’s ‘unfair’ that the three winners of last weekend’s Leinster SFC first round ties should have to play again this weekend.
McHugh’s Westmeath charges set up a local derby with Meath in Tullamore next Sunday after hammering Longford, while Laois and Wicklow will face Kildare and Dublin in the quarter-finals following their respective wins over Offaly and Carlow.
“I actually feel that’s a wee bit unfair,” the 2012 Donegal All-Ireland SFC winner told the Irish Independent.
“All the teams that played this weekend have to play next weekend against one of the ‘big four’, if you want to call them that. There should be a two-week break, because they can go and watch [their next Leinster opponent] today. I’m sure [Meath manager] Robbie Brennan was out there.
“We’re looking at Longford since the league, so we need to get studying them [Meath] from tonight on and we’ll see what we can bring.”
