One of Offaly GAA’s most famous clubs has cleared a profit of over €300,000 in a major fundraising drive.
Community spirit is alive and well in the football-mad village of Rhode where the locals came together to raise the huge sum for the club’s exciting new development. The ‘Rhode Goes to Hollywood’ fundraiser, which featured 1982 All-Ireland SFC winning ‘super-sub’ Seamus Darby among other local GAA luminaries, culminated in over 700 people packing out the Tullamore Court Hotel last Saturday night for the Oscars-style Awards Ceremony.
“To see a production of this quality delivered in Co. Offaly by volunteers, supporters, players, families and friends is something truly special. The work, the talent, the effort and the pride in this parish was there for everyone to see,” fundraising partners LipSync Battles Ireland enthused.
“And on top of all that, the support shown on the night has helped raise an unbelievable amount of revenue that will help secure the future of this great GAA football stronghold for years to come.”
The proceeds from the event will go towards the development of a new clubhouse boasting four dressing rooms, a fully-equipped gym, a one-wall handball court and a catering hub as well as an all-weather pitch, running track, car park and playground at Fr Dowling Park.
The fundraiser saw local faces transformed into movie stars, featuring seven short films starring Rhode's very own resident as actors, extras and behind-the-scenes talent. On a night of glitz and glamour, the audience were treated to hilarious, heartwarming and unmissable Rhode renditions of iconic scenes from The Snapper, Derry Girls, The Field and more.
