An Offaly SFC which was branded a farce by many owing to the fact that no team can be eliminated before the knockout stages has been made somewhat interesting by the splendid form of Shamrocks in the first two rounds.

Despite missing key players due to emigration and injury, the Rahan-parish outfit – who survived a relegation playoff against neighbours Clara last year – have taken two big scalps in Ferbane and Edenderry. They followed up their 1-11 to 1-10 Round 1 victory over last year’s runners-up Ferbane with another one-point win over Edenderry, 1-9 to 0-11, last weekend thanks to a fisted point from Nigel Dunne in injury-time. The veteran county star also accounted for the only goal from a penalty just before half-time.

In the other Group 2 game, Ferbane scored two late points per Darragh Flynn and Jack Egan to edge out Durrow by 1-14 to 2-10. In Group 1, champions Tullamore made light work of Bracknagh (3-11 to 1-5), while Rhode also made it two wins from two with a comfortable 2-11 to 0-7 victory over newly-promoted Ballycommon, who ran Tullamore to a point in the opening round.
