Tyrone GAA has been rocked by the tragic news that hurling star Damian Casey has died while on holidays in Spain.
Having made his inter-county debut in 2012, Casey was regarded as possibly Tyrone’s greatest ever hurler and scored 0-14 in the Red Hands’ Nickey Rackard Cup final success over Roscommon at Croke Park last month.
It is understood that the 29-year old died after an accident at a swimming pool in Spain where he had been attending a wedding which was scheduled for today (Saturday) and has since been cancelled.
A two-time GAA/GPA Champion 15 award winner, he also represented his country in shinty internationals against Scotland.
"This breaking news is beyond belief," said Tyrone county board chairman Michael Kerr.
"Someone who brought honour, delight and simple, straightforward gladness to our whole county, and far beyond, is gone and it's so hard to take in."
TweetDamian Casey was a special gift to Tyrone and to hurling. We were the richer for his presence and are the poorer for his passing.
