Clare GAA club in mourning after sudden death of young hurler

April 10, 2022

Michael Hynes RIP.

The Whitegate GAA club in Clare has been left devastated after the sudden death of one of its promising young hurlers.

Whitegate native Michael Hynes passed away unexpectedly last Tuesday at the age of 22.

Affectionately known as Mikey, the talented UL student was Whitegate's top scorer in last year’s Clare SHC with 1-30 in four matches.

In addition to playing underage for his county, Michael captained Scariff Community College to their first All-Ireland hurling title in 28 years with victory over St Fergal's, Rathdowney back in 2018.

Michael was also named man-of-the-match in February's All-Ireland intermediate final victory for UL where he was studying for a Bachelor Degree in business studies.

His funeral Mass will take place today, Sunday, April 10th, in St. Flannan’s Church, Whitegate at 1pm with burial afterwards in Clonrush Cemetery.

The Whitegate senior hurling panel paid an emotional tribute to their late teammate in a statement on social media.

‘Our Mike’

The Whitegate GAA Senior Hurling Panel wish to offer our sincere condolences to Declan, Annette, Katie, Alison, Corinna and all the Hynes and Kerrigan family on the passing of Michael.

Mikey was one of us.

He was renowned throughout the county and further afield for his remarkable hurling ability and his commitment to, what was to him, his craft.

To witness Michael play hurling was special. To play hurling alongside Michael and call him one of us was even more special.

He brought immense joy to us as a group, both on and off the field. Notwithstanding his hurling prowess, Michael was a gentleman and a credit to his wonderful family.

Our hearts are broken but as long as the black and red of Whitegate GAA is worn, Michael Hynes, our teammate, our friend, ‘our Mike’ will be remembered and honoured.

Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
