Replying To LaLu:  "I see that 86 people turned up a home league game for the county that tonight's referee was from. Not much more to be said about football knowledge there. I had more at my child's birthday party..."
Pity he didn't go and make it 87

It's been traditional to play the final in Cooley in honour of Paddy Sheelan. Very scenic place too. 10 minutes from motorway

Very disappointing game to-day. Cannot see the point of Gaels having no forwards in position in the first half and allowing Blues to tip tap the ball across their backs to the frustration of the paying spectators. In the first half after a Gaels kick out they kept the ball for a dozen passes - some very dodgy ones - and were still only 30 Yards from their own goals. This style will not win games or bring back supporters. The Blues had it easy but as said already when tested a few times they looked weak enough. With a little luck Gaels could have had three goals. Good luck to Blues in Leinster. If they get a run they might need Lynch.

I hope there will be fun in Monasterboice to-morrow with a new name on Joe. There will be the biggest crowd since the Pope was there in 1979. Jocks for Joe.

What a finish. Congrats to all. It didn't look on till late in extra time. Had to celebrate with black sole and Tullamore dew. Might talk about performance later in week. For now it results that count. Well done panel and management.

Darver needs a small stand to shelter spectators . The other facilities are quite good, the big difference from Owenbeg is the lack of a stand. It does provide excellent facilities for training and for under age use.

Good luck to Wayne and the lads. At the start of every year you look forward to some excitement from the Reds and this year is no different. The Byrne Cup game in Navan was a good start to this season. Hope we get more of those.

Louth'S Most Consistent Senior Clubs - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Past hurler:  "Just a topic on the Top Senior clubs in Louth over the last 20 years and how they manage to keep their senior status year after year without making the drop. Obviously catchment area would play a big part in playing numbers but you obviously have to have the correct structures in place to bring underage players through. Top 5 would probably be Newtown Blues obviously at the top, St. Pats, Ardee St. Mary's, Cooley until a few years ago, Naomh Martin. Smaller clubs seem to yoyo between Senior and Inter like Clans, Gers, Brides etc as they would be smaller catchment but is that the only reason? Glyde Rangers had a massive free fall from Senior to Junior but they actually have some great footballers. Sometimes a good batch of players can come together at the same time and a team can ascent the whole way up through the ranks, St. Kevin's could be that team now. But the big senior clubs just seem to constantly have a flow of good players coming through."
In the 20 year period 1998-2017 St.Patricks have won seven Joe Wards.Newtown Blues have five and Mattock Rangers four. Why would the Blues be obviously at the top?

Frank Lynch - 1 Like(s)
Frank Lynch had a good story in last weeks Democrat about how he got fit with a cayenne pepper poltos to captain the Geraldine's to win the Christy Bellew against the Finbarrs in 1966. A three weeks solution to a cruciate problem. Nowadays we hear of lads being out for the year. Frank must have lots of great stories from Sam Maguire to Louth manager and Chairman ,the Geraldine's and everything in between. He should write a book.

Should Louth Have More All-Stars? - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Ollie2:  "I still laugh when I hear people say that he only got his an all-star because of the farce of the 2010 Leinster final. Another one I heard was someone had no time for Paddy Keenan when he retired from Louth in 2015 because he would not play for Colin Kelly. Paddy Keenan gave 12 great years to the Wee County cause and not once did he Louth down."
Paddy never let anyone down. He played for Ireland against Australia in Croke Park on a Saturday night and turned out for St.Pats the following morning in a league game in the Clans field. What a man. Never less than 100%. He also takes more than his share of abuse on the field. I hope that's not going to spread to off the field comments.

Replying To bennypoor:  "Why is this competition even still going ahead did even 8 teams play in it"
Lucky for some 13 teams involving 19 clubs participated. Some very good games. Final is St.Marys v St.Moctas/ St. Brides in Darver on Saturday @5.30. Could go either way. If it's half as good as the Mocthas/ Brides v Pats semi- final it will be well worth a visit. The Clans v Cooley Shield final is also in Darver @ 5.00.on Saturday. Probably on a second pitch. Nothing like being there.

All Ireland Medal Holders Rip - 1 Like(s)
In recent weeks two South Louth men who won All Ireland medals sadly passed away. Alfie Monks ,Naomh Mhuire ,who was in the glorious '57 panel that won Sam died two ago while Ted Russell, Glen Emmets , who was in the panel that won the Junior All Ireland In 1961 died at the week-end. May they rest in peace. Both men played in the early rounds of the respective championships. A great time in Louth football. Condolences and thanks to both families.

Cooley may have turned corner at week-end. Freed of relegation worries and qualified for under 18 final. That League 1 game in Lordship in a few weeks could be worth seeing if we can get in. Hope J.P . and Mick Fanning get those senior medals shortly. If not Darren and Ronan might push St. Mary's to it. Always like to see lads who contributed a lot to county team winning a senior medal. Stephen Melia , Christy Grimes and John O'Brien come to mind. And of course the Pats lads - Paddy, Baby, Dessie, Ray and Seán. Sad for those Dreadnots stars who seem to be slipping off with No Joe.
