McDonnell, Patrick

Patrick 'Packie' McDonnell from Oaklawns, St Alphonsus Road, Dundalk, who passed away on February 28th, 2016, aged 88, was a member of a famous GAA family and a talented footballer in his youth. He lined out with the local GAA club, Darver Volunteers, for a number of years. Darver Volunteers were a force to be reckoned with in the 1950s and one of their star players, 1957 All-Ireland winner Jimmy McDonnell, was a first cousin of Packie. Packie starred on the side that won the 1956 Louth JFC. That Darver team was also a top seven-a-side act at tournaments and festivals around that time.
