Longford won their third Lory Meagher Cup thanks to a 1-18 to 0-13 victory over Leitrim at Croke Park this afternoon.
Reuben Murray’s goal in the 51st minute proved key in swinging this derby decider the way of the Midlanders as they earned themselves promotion to the Nickey Rackard Cup for 2027.
An airtight first-half at headquarters saw the teams all square on 0-6 apiece after the opening 20 minutes ahead of the points of Maitiu O’Donohoe and Martin Farrell pushing Longford two ahead.
Leitrim responded brilliantly by sending over the next four scores unanswered – three of them from Colm Canning – as they ushered themselves towards a 0-10 to 0-8 half-time advantage.
Paul Mulligan swapped points with Farrell (free) and O’Donoghue early on in the resumption and Paddy Lynam made it a one-point game before Murray’s strike saw Longford surging back in front.
Murray, David Buckley and Farrell (65) registered more points for the victors, with Martin Feeney pulling one back for the Connacht men ahead of Diarmuid Cahill’s side hitting the net four scores via Micheál Mulcahy, Lynam, Farrell (65) and Cathal Mullane.
Phillip Burgess netted a late goal for Leitrim, but it couldn’t halt their neighbours’ charge towards their county’s first Lory Meagher Cup success in a dozen years as they now join Fermanagh and Louth at the top of the competition’s roll of honour list.
