Galway edged a 2-12 to 1-14 win over Mayo at Tuam Stadium this afternoon to claim their 11th Connacht FBD Football League title.

Rob Finnerty’s free at the death proved the difference between the sides as the Tribesmen claimed their first success in this pre-season competition in four years.

Padraic Joyce’s men were control at half-time thanks to goals from Oisin McDonagh and Brian Cogger that saw them moving towards a 2-6 to 0-5 lead at the interval.

Mayo started the second-half with a Cian McHale two-pointer and eventually trimmed their deficit down to three after Jack Carney sent one over from beyond the arc with 10 minutes remaining.

Fives minutes later and Andy Moran’s side would have the ball in the back of the hosts’ net via an Adam Barrett penalty.

Stephen Coen’s point put the Westerners in front in the 56th minute but Galway still found time to win it, with Liam O Conghaile’s leveller being backed up by the winner from Finnerty in the fifth minute of injury-time.
