Street brawl or football? - 1 Like(s)

Replying To gotmilk:  "But weren't Dublin supposed to be out before Mayo? Weren't the Dubs late? I'm not sure we are getting the full story there."
This is my view of it too. Dublin were about 5 minutes late coming out compared to their scheduled time per the program. Mayo were scheduled out 2 minutes after Dublin's original time. Therefore I would assume they left the dressing room at their allotted time but were then told to hold on in the tunnel until Dublin went on to the pitch first. Obviously that is a lot of conjecture on my part there but would seem a lot more logical/likely an explanation than the one saying Mayo waited in the tunnel for Dublin in order to get in their faces or unnerve them or whatever. Obviously things got a bit tasty then! I just hope that poor man has stopped shaking from the whole ordeal!

Club championship - 1 Like(s)
If somehow we are left with 12 clubs in senior next year (which isn't even a guarantee), the club championship should then be ran as 2 groups of 6 meaning at least 5 games each. 1st in each group go in to either semi. 2nd in group A vs 3rd in group B in one quarter final 2nd in group B vs 3rd in group A in the other quarter 4th & 5th place in each group: championship over. 6th place in each group: relegation play-off

Unique GAA Club Names - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Bon:  "Langford Slashers, would love to know how that came about?"
They're not even the only club called Slashers in the county. Shroid Slashers are a junior club based just outside the town but in the same parish. However, they haven't fielded a team in a couple of years, and they have no underage teams either. Apparently, both are named after Myles 'The Slasher' O'Reilly who was an Irish patriot in the 1600's.

Replying To LongfordgaaAbú:  "Population has relevance in understanding whether clubs are not fulfilling fixtures because of a lack of players. Towns in Longford should never be forfeiting fixtures due to lack of players. If they are, it is a prime example of a crisis in the game in the county (there is a distinct difference between whether population can win you titles versus whether it can give you the ability to field a team). The question to be asked here is why did those four clubs not fulfill their fixtures? What was the reason given in each case by Rathcline, Dromard, Granard and Fr. Manning Gaels? What was the reason why Granard didn't show up at the weekend or why the Gaels forfeited their match against Mostrim? The deterrent (a fine) clearly does not work in protecting the competition from those clubs bringing it into disrepute by not showing up. Imagine making a statement that lads playing for senior clubs in one of the county's premier competitions would not tog out because the championship is over or they are out of contention... lol, such a statement. Leagues have been going on after teams are out of championship for many many years now, and league final rounds involving teams who are no longer in contention has been around since the Leader Cup started in 1937. If you believe what you have written above about lads not bothering because there is nothing at stake, then the state of football in Longford is worse than imagined. PS - Dromard and Granard both conceded games in Round 4 and 5 respectively... neither was out of Championship or out of contention for the league at that stage. What was their excuse then? I don't know what measure will work, but the current measure clearly doesn't. You seem to think that a point raised about a problem has no relevance if it is not accompanied by the solution to that problem. What an odd mindset."
I'll tell you one measure that will work - stop finishing the league in October & November after the championship. I haven't played in a few years, but I can tell you any appetite for football for the year honestly vanished once championship was over. Nobody wants to play league matches in November, after training from the previous early January usually.

Replying To LongfordgaaAbú:  "Here are the clubs relegated from Senior over the past 10 years, and whether they made the drop or stayed up. I can't recall for 2014, so someone might help with that one. 2022 - Killashee 2021 - Fr. Manning Gaels 2020 - No Relegation (Covid year) 2019 - Rathcline & Granard - Stayed up 2018 - Ballymahon 2017 - Killashee & Fr. Manning Gaels 2016 - Rathcline 2015 - Carrickedmond - Stayed up 2014 - ??? 2013 - Granard & Fr. Manning Gaels - Stayed up For 2019, both stayed up to maintain a 12-team structure for 2020 (I think Covid in 2020 might have changed the CB view and drove that decision, but I can't recall exactly). For 2018, Ballymahon, Carrickedmond and Slashers were in the playoff for relegation, but before a ball could be kicked on it, Ballymahon decided to make the drop. For 2015, Carrickedmond lost the relegation playoff final to Ballymahon, but a new format for 2016 meant they stayed Senior. That new format had an uneven third group in 2016 with 5 teams rather than 4. So you'd have to wonder at the logic around that decision. For 2013, the relegation playoff involved Fr. Manning Gaels, Granard and Ballymahon. In the end Ballymahon survived and the other two were 'relegated'. But neither made the drop to Intermediate."
Did a bit of googling and it looks like Ardagh were senior in 2014 and intermediate in 2015.

Will Super Clubs Ruin The Gaa - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Viking66:  "Ballyhale, all the main Ulster teams, Kilmallock and Ballygunner aren't urban teams. Neither are Kilcoo, Glen, etc in football."
Are Ballygunner not a Waterford city club? Or at the very least their catchment area takes in part of the city?
