Fermanagh made a winning start to their Tailteann Cup campaign this afternoon by defeating Longford (1-24 to 2-17) in Enniskillen.

Oisin O’Toole and Conor Love traded early goals in this second tier first round encounter, which saw Dylan Farrell’s two-pointer late in the first-half giving Longford a 1-10 to 1-9 lead at the interval.

Declan Bonner’s side hit five unaswered points in the third quarter before conceding a Farrell goal and, after Stephen McGuillion sailed over a two-pointer, late scores from Garvan Jones (free), skipper Ronan McCaffrey, Shane McGullion and Oisin Kelm would prove huge for the Ernesiders.

Laois got up and running with a 1-23 to 0-19 win against Wicklow at Laois Hire O’Moore Park, where Evan O’Carroll (1-6) netted the game’s only goal midway through the first-half.

The home side were dominant in during opening 45 minutes, running up a 1-19 to 0-8 lead before two-pointers from Mark Jackson, Eoin Darcy and Eoin Murtagh took some tarnish off the scoreline for Oisin McConville’s men.

In Dungarvan, London hit the net five times on their way to recording a 5-12 to 0-10 win against hosts Waterford.

Joe McGill, Shay Rafter, Jim Davis and David Gouldson all raised green flags that saw the Exiles towards a 4-1 to 0-4 lead at the half, before Finbarr Crowley netted their fifth goal in the game’s closing stages.

Sean O’Connor starred as Tipperary edged out Sligo by 0-17 to 1-12 at Markievicz Park to mark a winning start to their Tailteann Cup campaign.

After early two-pointers by Micheál Freaney and Daithi Hogan, O’Connor sent over two more from distance for the visitors as they ran up a 0-11 to 0-4 lead.

Lee Deignan grabbed a goal for the Yeats men just before the break, but Tipp would push their advantage out to seven again in the second-half prior to Pat Spillane grabbing what proved to be a consolation two-pointer for the home side late on.

Meanwhile, it took extra time to separate Antrim and Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park where the visitors came away with a 6-17 to 2-26 win in the end.

Conor Crowley’s point looked to be enough for Carlow to win it in normal time, but Joseph Finnegan forced the extra periods for the Glensmen who hit their fifth goal through Ryan McQuillan three minutes into the resumption and netted again late on to seal the win.

Yesterday’s first round clashes in the Tailteann Cup saw Wexford cruising to victory over at home against last year’s beaten finalists Limerick, while Offaly edged out Clare by three points for the their first competitive win of the season.
